Here is an e-mail sent to me (Lew Helgeson) by Shari, his daughter, the day after he died.

Hi Lew and Carolyn,

My Dad passed away last night at about 7:00 PM. He had a stroke a week ago and never recovered. He was paralyzed in his throat so couldn't eat or drink. Thursday night they started him on morphine for the pain that he had due to the fall he took when he had the stroke. He slipped into a coma Thursday night and stayed that way till he passed. It is very hard for me but I know that he is in a much better place and free of pain. I have been lucky to have had him with me for so long after my Mom died. Aunt Dorothy and I are now looking forward to some peaceful times together. It has been a stressful year so far. My Dad died 2 months to the day that Uncle Chuck died. Could you please forward this to Bob and John I lost their emails.

Addendum, !8-Aug-2005

August 18, 2005, 11:45 AM

To the friends and relatives of Robert Stanley (Bob) Helgeson:

Bob passed away peacefully early this morning about 1:40 AM. His funeral
is scheduled for Saturday, August 27, 2005 at 11 AM, which by coincidence,
would have been the 112th birthday of our Mother, Rose Helgeson.

Bob had had prostate cancer a number of years ago but in January of 2005,
his prostate cancer had returned with enthusiasm and had spread throughout
his rib cage and also in the shoulder bone. It was too advanced for
radiation unless any of the spots suddenly became huge and caused a
problem. The oncologists felt that the cancer could possibly be held in
check for two to three years by hormone therapy to rid him of any
testosterone which seems to increase prostate cancer.
