The sons of Helge Aslagen Asselson (father of Stanley Helgeson), changed their names to Helgeson, Berg, or Bergson, when they moved from Norway to Minnesota & North Dakota, U.S.A.. I had been told that they came from the Island of Helgoberg. Thus the HELGEson, BERG, or BERGson. I cannot find an island named Helgoberg in my Encyclopedia Britannica Atlas. From research done by Verda Helgeson Thometz, Helge Aslagen Asselson was born in Gol, Norway, an inland farming village in the Hollindag valley, about 100 miles from Oslo. I do know that brothers of Stanley Helgeson, took the names of Helgeson, Berg and Bergson. (See family group chart MRIN # 23). From Verda's research NOTES for the sons who changed their names to BERG, she says; "Karl Berg, the son of Helge Aslagen Asselson, took the name BERG, from the name of the farm in Norway." The same NOTE for Engebret Helgeson BERG. Helge Aslagen Asselson, worked as a shoemaker and cooper.
