An anecdote as remembered by Lewis Helgeson.
Uncle Bill never married. He lived as a hermit on a ranch in Wyoming and had many horses.
My Mother, Rose Veletta Lewis, used to tell us that during World War I the US Government, in the form of the Army Cavalry, wanted Uncle Bill to sell his horses but Bill didn't want to. The sherrif came out to his ranch and placed him under arrest, took him to Evanston, and was about to put him in jail when he pulled a small pistol out of his boot and escaped. He later lost his horses through confiscation.
My Mother would bake him either a plum pudding or a fruit cake every Christmas for many years. I don't recall if he ever acknowledged receiving them.
