The George S. Helgeson Family

George Stanley Helgeson and Rose Veletta Lewis were married in the Army chapel Camp Cody, New Mexico, on April 6, 1917. Mother (Rose) occasionally told us that when they were kneeling at the altar, a hole in Dad's army-issue shoe was quite visible to the audience. She also told us that on their honeymoon, they were using a newspaper for a table cloth, except that it extended several inches beyond the table top. Dad set his coffie cup down on the unsupported newspaper with the expected suprise results - coffee on the floor - and a good laugh for both of them.

Their first-born, George Lewis, arrived on October 2, 1923. This picture was taken in 1925 when I was 2 years old.

I remember very well that my Dad told me many times:

"Lewis, we were so thankful to God for you that we dedicated you to God's service."

This has been a problem for me all my life. You see, my Dad was a Methodist minister and I am sure that he originally expected me to go into the ministry.

This photo shows the entire family when Dad and Mother were living at 911 North Central Avenue, Duluth, Minnesota. It was taken in 1943. From left to right in the front row are:
